Supportive, Preventive Wisdom Tooth Care

Wisdom teeth often make their appearance during the late teen years or early twenties, and not always in the most convenient way. If you’re experiencing soreness, crowding, or pressure near the back of your mouth, your wisdom teeth may be the cause.

At Rundle Dental, we provide straightforward, thorough care when wisdom teeth start to cause trouble—or before they do. Whether you’re currently experiencing discomfort or want to be proactive, we’re here to guide you through your options with care and clarity.

Not sure what’s going on with your wisdom teeth? Book an assessment and we’ll take a closer look.

When Wisdom Teeth Might Need to Come Out

Wisdom teeth don’t always have enough room to grow in properly. They may come in at odd angles, only partially erupt, or stay trapped under the gums, often causing discomfort or infection.

You might notice:

  • Soreness or pressure at the back of your mouth
  • Swollen gums
  • Trouble opening your jaw
  • Bad breath or a strange taste
  • Teeth shifting or crowding

If these sound familiar, a digital X-ray can help us see what’s going on.

Why Removal May Be the Best Option

Wisdom teeth can lead to issues even before they start to hurt. Removing them can help avoid:

  • Crowding of healthy teeth
  • Tooth decay in hard-to-clean areas
  • Gum inflammation or infection
  • Jaw discomfort or pressure
  • Cysts or damage to nearby structures

If we notice any red flags during your exam—even if you’re not experiencing pain yet—we’ll discuss the best course of action to protect your long-term oral health.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Wisdom tooth removal is typically performed under local anesthesia, but sedation may be recommended depending on your comfort level and the complexity of the procedure. Here’s how it usually goes:

  • Step 1: We’ll thoroughly numb the area to keep you comfortable
  • Step 2: The dentist will gently remove the tooth, possibly using a small incision
  • Step 3: You’ll receive detailed instructions for recovery and be free to head home the same day

Healing After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Most people are back to their regular routine in just a few days. To help speed up your healing:

  • Stick to soft foods and cold compresses
  • Rest and take medications as prescribed
  • Keep your mouth clean (gently!)

Avoid:

  • Straws and suction
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Hard, crunchy, or spicy foods
  • Strenuous activity for a few days

If anything doesn’t feel quite right, such as prolonged swelling, bleeding, or fever, please reach out. We’re always here for follow-up support.

FAQs About Wisdom Tooth Removal

Will the process hurt?

The procedure itself is done under local anesthesia, and many people choose sedation to feel more relaxed. Some soreness after is normal and manageable.

Do I really need them removed?

Not always! If they’re healthy and positioned well, we may just monitor them. However, if they are impacted or putting other teeth at risk, removal is often the safer option.

When is the best time to remove them?

Earlier is usually better—when the roots are still developing, the procedure and recovery tend to be easier.
