What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom restoration that covers and protects a tooth that’s been weakened, cracked, or treated with root canal therapy. It reinforces your tooth’s structure while improving its appearance.

Crowns can be a great solution for teeth that are weakened, broken, discoloured, or have undergone root canal therapy. We often recommend zirconia crowns for their strength and natural look, suitable for everything from back molars to front teeth.

When Is a Crown the Right Choice?

We may recommend a crown if you have:

  • A dental implant that requires a restoration
  • A tooth that’s chipped, worn down, or fractured
  • An old filling that’s no longer secure
  • A misshapen or severely discoloured tooth

What to Expect from the Crown Process

Depending on the type of crown, the process may involve:

  • Preparation: We shape the tooth and scan it for a digital design.
  • Design & milling: Your crown will be created in a lab.
  • Placement: We check the fit, make adjustments if needed, and cement it in place.

Types of Crowns Offered at Rundle Dental

We’ll recommend the most suitable crown material based on your tooth’s location and your goals:

  • Zirconia: Strong and tooth-coloured—ideal for most cases
  • Porcelain: Highly aesthetic for front teeth
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal: Combines strength with a natural appearance
  • Metal: Durable for hard-working molars (not typically used for visible teeth)
  • Composite: Matches tooth colour but less durable over time

What Is a Dental Bridge?

If you’re missing a tooth, a dental bridge can fill the gap. A bridge includes a false tooth (called a pontic) supported by crowns on the adjacent teeth. This helps restore chewing function, speech clarity, and facial structure, while preventing surrounding teeth from shifting out of place.

There are different types of bridges for different needs:

  • Traditional bridges: Supported by crowns on both sides of the gap
  • Maryland bridges: Uses metal or porcelain “wings” bonded to the back of nearby teeth
  • Cantilever bridges: Used when only one adjacent tooth is available for support
  • Implant-supported bridges: Secured to dental implants for maximum stability

What to Expect When Getting a Bridge

The process for receiving a bridge usually includes:

  • Tooth preparation: We’ll reshape the adjacent teeth to make space for the supporting crowns.
  • Impressions & temporary bridge: We’ll take impressions to custom-create your bridge and provide a temporary one in the meantime.
  • Final placement: Once the bridge is ready, we’ll cement it in place and make any final adjustments for comfort and function.

Bridges typically require a series of appointments to complete all the necessary steps.

Caring for Your Crowns & Bridges

With proper care, your restoration can last for many years. Here’s how to help it last:

  • Brush and floss daily (especially around the bridge)
  • Avoid chewing hard objects like ice or pens
  • See your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups
  • Use floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean around your bridge

Most crowns last 10–15 years or longer with good oral hygiene, and bridges can also last well over a decade.
